Newfoundland and Labrador is unique in many ways including its art and artists. I encountered this whalebone carving while wandering the streets of St. Johns with my Canon Rebel.
I am a graphic designer, artist and commercial illustrator from the "old school". I have tons of early works that are now on the market and many more in the "file cabinet" that I hope to bring to light soon. Wonderful carving. V/T. Several commercial fishermen in my family. One use to make crochet hooks for my Aunt from fish bones. One did simple scrimshaw. First time I have seen a carving. He has an Eskimo look to him. Very nice
